Dog Food for Weight Loss: How to Help Your Dog Slim Down Safely
Nearly 60% of US dogs are overweight or obese according to APOP data. The consequences are real: shortened lifespan, accelerated joint disease, increased cancer risk, reduced exercise tolerance, and metabolic complications. Here's how to approach weight loss safely and effectively.
Quantifying the Problem
Use the 9-point Body Condition Score. At BCS 5 (ideal): ribs easily felt but not seen, visible waist from above, abdominal tuck from side. At BCS 7 (overweight): ribs palpable with pressure, waist barely visible, tuck absent. At BCS 9 (obese): ribs not palpable even with firm pressure, obvious fat deposits, distended abdomen.
For a rough weight target: each BCS unit above 5 represents approximately 10% excess body weight. A dog at BCS 7 needs to lose approximately 20% of current body weight. A 60lb Labrador at BCS 7 should ideally weigh 48 lbs.
The Caloric Approach
Calculate Resting Energy Requirement at ideal body weight (not current weight): RER = 70 x (ideal weight in kg)^0.75. Feed at RER x 1.0 (no multiplier) for weight loss. This is a 20-30% caloric restriction compared to typical adult maintenance levels.
Monitor rate of loss: target 1-2% body weight loss per week. Faster than this risks muscle mass loss. Slower is fine but patience is required.
Best Food Types for Weight Loss
High protein, lower carbohydrate: protein is more satiating than carbohydrate at equal calorie levels and supports preservation of lean muscle mass during caloric restriction. Foods with 25%+ protein on a dry matter basis are generally better for weight loss than high-carbohydrate kibbles.
Higher moisture content: wet food or rehydrated freeze-dried food provides greater volume per calorie than dry food. A dog eating 300ml of rehydrated food feels fuller than one eating 30g of kibble with the same calorie content.
Avoid: foods marketed as 'weight management' that achieve caloric reduction by adding fiber fillers and reducing protein. This preserves calories while reducing nutrient density and often causes significant muscle loss during weight reduction.
